Information

The volunteer-run information centre is located inside the Market Hall, just look for the red doors with the 1854 plaque above them.

Their friendly team are on hand to point you in the right direction to help you get the most out of your visit.

You will also find public toilets in the Market Hall, towards the back of the building.

Castles and other buildings

EH = English Heritage. NT = National Trust. HHA = Historic Houses Association. NA = National Art Pass benefit.

  • Auckland Castle - once home to the Prince Bishops of Durham, now central to a large-scale regeneration project. 🐕
  • Barnard Castle - the town is fine in its own right, but this is the magnificent 12th century castle, perched above the Tees (EH) 🐕
  • Bolton Castle Grim, or romantic, Bolton Castle looms over Wensleydale (HHA, NA)
  • Bowes Museum: magnificently over-the-top museum in nearby Barnard Castle (NA) 🐕
  • Easby Abbey: picturesque ruined abbey beside the River Swale, a short walk from Richmond (EH). Free guided walks are offered on Sundays at 2pm (from 9 April until..?) 🐕
  • Fountains Abbey The largest monastic ruins in Britain, in an incomparable setting (NT) 🐕
  • Georgian Theatre Royal - Britain's oldest working theatre in its original form, is both playhouse and theatre museum.
  • Jervaulx Abbey: one of the great Cistercian abbeys of Yorkshire is now a ruin in the tranquil setting of rural Wensleydale. 🐕
  • Kiplin Hall, a fine Jacobean house, built by the founder of the US state of Maryland (HHA) 🐕
  • Middleham Castle - the childhood home of Richard III, in a beautiful part of lower Wensleydale (EH) 🐕
  • Mount Grace Priory Monastic remains and an Arts-and-Crafts manor house, under the edge of the North York Moors (NT, EH) 🐕
  • Newby Hall Beautiful Georgian house and gardens by Robert Adam and Thomas Chippendale (HHA, NA)
  • Raby Castle - castle and walled gardens in 200 acres of lush parkland, with large herds of deer. 🐕
  • Richmond Castle A vast Norman castle, perched over the rushing River Swale (EH) 🐕
  • Ripon Cathedral People have come to worship at this fine church for more than 1,350 years.
  • Rokeby Park​ Country house in the Italianate Palladian style, set in attractive parkland (HHA, NA)

  • Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle (14 miles). Nature trail, family fun-days, crafts workshops, story garden, play area. 🥤☔️

  • Forbidden Corner, near Middleham (13 miles). A labyrith of tunnels, secret chambers, follies and surprises. Good children's play area. Utterly unique. 🥤
  • Foxglove Covert, Catterick Garrison (3 miles). Local Nature Reserve, with trails, hides, activities and a Field Centre.🥤🦮
  • Georgian Theatre Royal. Go behind the scenes, try on costumes, discover your inner actor. ☔️
  • Green Howards Museum. Family friendly museum with stories of 300 years of friendship and adventure, service and sacrifice to explore. Quizzes, holiday activities and a great gift shop. 🦮☔️
  • Hazel Brow Farm, Low Row (15 miles). Alpaca treks, spring lamb feeding, animal experiences, open days, trails - and basic camping! 🦮

  • Lightwater Valley, north of Ripon (20 miles). Large theme park with many rides and attractions. 🥤
  • Locomotion, Shildon (18 miles). What child doesn't enjoy a railway museum, steam engines and all? 🥤☔️

  • Playgrounds: best In Richmond is Ronaldshay Park (10-minute walk from the Info Centre)
  • Richmond Castle. Breathtaking Norman fortress, high above the River Swale. Great for picnics, family activities, running around. 🦮
  • Richmondshire Museum. Rambling old building, with exhibits from prehistory to the present day. Discovery Centre for children. ☔️
  • The Station. Renovated Victorian railway terminal, with ice-cream parlour, cinema, country walks on the doorstep. 🥤🦮☔️
  • Swaledale Museum, Reeth (10 miles). Geology, prehistory, and thousands of acres of glorious countryside all around. 🥤🦮☔️

  • Theatre Hullabaloo, Darlington (13 miles). Children's theatre with frequent performances, Enchanted Forest play area. 🥤☔️

  • Wensleydale Railway, Leeming Bar (12 miles) – Redmire and stations between. Heritage line through beautiful countryside. 🥤🦮
